Teacher Terminated for Racially Attacking Michelle Obama on Facebook
An employee of Forsyth County Schools in Georgia was relieved of duty after she posted a string of racist comments on Facebook. Jane Wood Allen, an elementary school teacher had racially attacked Hispanics, Muslims and First Lady Michelle Obama.
Allen was fired on Monday, October 3, 2016 after making numerous racist comments on articles she shared to her Facebook page.
The district spokesperson Jennifer Caracciolo gave the reason for termination saying: “Racism and discrimination are not tolerated in our school district. We are committed to ongoing staff training on the acceptance of all individuals.”

Apparently she repeatedly referred to Michelle Obama as a 'gorilla' and also called her "a disgrace to society". Below are some of her comments:
“I admire a gorilla more than I admire her. (Wait, I forgot, she is a gorilla)!”
“She is the worst example of a First Lady ever! (Oh sorry, I meant gorilla not First Lady)!”
Her racist remarks spurred a public outrage in the community. Parents began a page on Facebook demanding her termination using the hashtag #FireJaneWoodAllen. Her Facebook account has also been deleted.
Allen is not the only teacher who has been punished for making such comments. According to Forsyth News reports, a principal in the district was put on compulsory leave for anti-Muslim remarks. He was only allowed after he made a public apology.
Much as posting such racist comments on one's social media account can jeopardize someones job regardless of the field, teachers are the ones hit hard because they are supposed to be the role models to their students. So when they do so, it reflects badly on the institution in general.
So next time you want to post something that radical on your social media page, you may want to think again. This incident is proof of the power of social media. The parents and community at large used social media and united against racism. It also showed the school district's zero tolerance to racism and its commitment to diversity. We need such unity so we can rise against this hateful remarks.
