Although there were many standout moments from last night’s Emmys – including a proposal live on stage, no less – our highlight was Jenifer Lewis ditching the formal attire and wearing head to toe Nike on the red carpet instead.

The Black-ish actress’s unusual red carpet choice wasn’t about protesting the dress code, but more about support for Nike and Colin Kaepernick, in particular, his protest against racial injustice.

"I am wearing Nike to applaud them for supporting Colin Kaepernick and his protest against racial injustice and police brutality," the actress told Variety.

"I'll wear Nike to say thank you,” she added.

“Thank you for leading the resistance. We need more of corporate America to stand up also.

“These are not dark times, these are awakening times. And we all have to wake up.”

It didn’t end there, as she also had a personal message to Colin Kaepernick…

"Thank you, Colin," she added while getting evidently emotional.

"Thank you for all that you do. Thank you for being brave. Thank you for being courageous. Thank you for taking a knee. Thank you."

For anyone living under a rock for the past few weeks, Nike controversially chose former 49ers Colin Kaepernick quarterback as the face of its 30th anniversary ‘Just Do It’ campaign.

It was a scandalous casting because it came shortly after the quarterback chose to kneel (as opposed to standing) during the national anthem before his games as a sign of protest.

The controversial Nike ads featured the slogan: "Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything”.
