Father of interracial Family Uses His Newcasting Job to Confront His Racial Bias

Posted by Sidney, 21 Dec 16

Frank Somerville is a San Francisco's Fox affiliate, KTVU's anchor. He and his wife are parents to 2 beautiful daughters; one of their daughters is adopted and is black.

As a person with a mixed race family, you would expect him not to have any racial bias whatsoever. Apparently, not necessarily. Some time in August, Somerville made a public confession on his Facebook admitting to his racial bias. The post began:

"I have a confession to make.

Your perfect partner could be online right now...

What are you looking for?

It’s embarrassing.

Especially because I have an interracial family.

And because it shows that I still have bias."

Somerville went to narrate how it dawned on him that he is biased. Since accepting this own biases, he has decided to start the conversation on race. He is now using his job to enlighten other people on racism saying: “If I want people to talk, well I have to put myself out there first.”
